Taking Miniatures to the next Level

Most of the work you've seen from me on this Pixie Dust Miniatures blog has been 1:12 or 1:24 scale miniature. But did you know that in 2015 I started sculpted maquettes (characters / figurines) in 1:12 scale? I started by creating witches for a project called Good Witches Bad Witches ™ and then towards the end of last year I made this pirate. It's my own design of Captain Hook.

I thought some of you might like to see the process! Below is a 1 minute video of me creating my pirate, Captain Hook. It's not a tutorial - it's a glimpse which I hope you'll find fun and maybe inspiring.

Potted Toadstools

Wondering where I've been?! I'll write a full blog post all about my adventures and creations over at Tall Tales Productions soon.... but before that, know that I'm back, and plan to update this blog far more frequently!

Enjoy the photos below, including glimpses of my work space so that you can see behind the scenes. I made everything, including the flower pots myself - all by hand, so molds. Every little dot on each toadstool applied by me using a needle!

The Return of Enchanted Gourds

It was years ago that I last brought you a range of enchanted pumpkins and gourds, but since they were a success and people frequently ask for them, I made a whole new range last month. These are not the traditional orange, but white and striped. I based them on various squash I saw at my local farmer's market. Some have worried faces, some look smug and most have a spread of wonderful tiny green leaves growing out of them. Each leaf was hand painted. They are all very detailed and I hope you'll love them.

In 1 inch scale (1:12) but since pumpkins and gourds come in all shapes and sizes, these would be perfect for a half inch (1:24) scale scene or a 1:6 scale scene.

Witches this Halloween

This Halloween you can complete your miniature spooky scene with 1:12 scale (one inch scale) witches handmade in great detail by myself and available tomorrow at the online Pixie Dust Miniatures Etsy shop.

A bit about these Gardening Witches...!

Their names are Gertrude Nettlebed and Petunia Ditchwater. They are both dressed for tending their weed gardens and pumpkin patches, and both come with a little pumpkin / squash, which is not attached to the witch, so it can be removed and you can position them to hold something else.

These special witches were handmade for use in the short film 'Myrtle the Witch' by Tall Tales Productions, but since they are no longer needed for filming, they are available for sale as collectors items.

Magical Unicorn Horns

I stopped selling unicorn horns back in early 2012 because: a) - I ran out of stock, and b) - people wrote and complained that it was hurtful to them as it suggested violence towards animals. Since I feel I've cleared that matter up and fans are now happy with me selling unicorn horns again... I've just made them available again at my online Pixie Dust Miniatures shop!

Handmade by myself in one inch scale with great attention to detail, you can find these horns for sale here.

Here are some magical fairy tale photos to get you inspired when creating your own magical miniature setting. The witch that lives here had gone foraging on a warm summer morning, bringing back jars of moss, oak leaves, toadstools from fairy rings and unicorn horns which she found in the woods... see below...

My Workspace - Making Bat Apple Tarts

Ever heard of Bat Apple Tarts? Of course you haven't... they're only available at places like Ms Slugsy's cake and pie shop ' Beetle Treacle'. It's somewhere in Northern England.

Here is my workspace as I create my very own unique bat apple tarts....
I sculpted the base myself, so that it looks like a typical butter pastry crust that you'd get in an English pie shop. It was filled with 'pastry cream', then 'apple slices', a 'bat wing' in the center, and then the whole thing was glazed with 'caramel sauce'.
