Wizards Gather Here Signpost

Goodness, it's been a while since I've blogged! Been spending too much time on my miniature sets for a web series I'm working on, and not enough time sharing on here. Don't forget you can always see what I'm up to by clicking over to my other blog.

One of my favourite clients brought me such a fun commission last Friday - a spooky signpost which reads 'Wizards Gather Here'. I was delighted to make it. It's a little smaller than half inch (1:24) scale at her request and measures 2.5 inches high.
The base has faux moss and other foliage as well as glow-in-the-dark toadstools.

I took inspiration from Walt Disney's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' (1937) when I decided to include a carved owl design. Scroll down for some 'Snow White' stills which influenced me.

On researching owl designs from 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' (which I knew I had remembered seeing) I came across a blog (here) which looked into Disney's use of owls in the film more closely... interesting stuff. Last image is from his blog highlighting the owls.

Now and Then

My brother sent me some old photos and prompted me to remember how I used to love tiny things as a child.
You see I grew up in the English countryside in the tiniest village on the edge of nowhere, surrounded by fields... there wasn't much for my 5 siblings and me to do except use our imaginations and make our own fun. A big fallen tree became a pirate ship, I drew maps and buried them in the riverbed, and I especially remember searching for tiny people which my older sister and I believed lived in the trees. At some point I got my hands on some FIMO and started making miniatures for these tiny people and later selling them at primary (elementary) school for sweets.
For my 5th birthday my mum made me a Pink Tea Party Cake laden with tiny cakes, sandwiches and a tea set (all made from fondant icing)!

So here's the photos of me age 5, with my marvelous cake!







And roll on 24 years... this is me today. :)

A Magic Shop in Progress - My Workspace 2

Hi everyone,
It's late and I've been so busy in my workshop that my floors now resemble a hamster cage, but the lovely lady I've been making the Harry Potter Magic Shop - 'Boggarts Bazaar' for has given me permission to post images of my work-in-progress on my blog, so I thought I'd quickly do that now!

Half Inch Scale Mixed Spellbooks!

Magic has never been so tiny...!

Still making items in half inch (1:24) scale for the time being and you can find some at my shop in the 'Half Inch Scale' section.

These are mixed spellbooks - some with cobweb covers, others in mottled green or red scales... and all finished with hints of gold. They measure 0.9 cm in length. They can easily be used as small notebooks for witches in a one inch (1:12) scale setting as well.

Happy St Patrick's Day everyone! Is everyone wearing somegthing green and have Guinness plans tonight?! Good. :)

Leprechaun Shoe Earrings for St Paddy's Day!

Leprechauns are, of course, Irish fairies or pixies. The earliest reference comes from a Mediaeval tale about a mischievous, solitary little creature who was described by Yeats as a "degenerate fairy" who is "not wholly good nor wholly evil." Their main vocation is making and repairing shoes... so it seemed like a good idea to make tiny miniature Leprechaun shoes in time for St Patrick's Day (17th March) and these ones are actually earrings on surgical steel findings.

Meant to let people know yesterday that I just listed the old stone enchanted bottles but I forgot and then someone bought half of them a few hours ago it reminded me that I should have mentioned it on here!
