Want a Bite?

Remember my signature poison apple pie inspired by 'Snow White'? I never really get tired of making classic poisonous red apples or anything related, so I was intrigued when a client in Paris requested literally hundreds of miniature classic red apples. I took on this commission at the start of this year as a matter of fact, and ended up making her some other fruit as well.

So I know people like to see 'work in progress' photos of large commissions such as this and so I have included some here in this post.

If you follow my other 'filmic' blog (here) in which I talk about my work as a miniaturist in general, and not just for Pixie Dust Miniatures, you may have caught the post about this a while back - in January.
You can read about my miniatures in film, or what I have to say about miniatures in film in general at this other blog of mine.

My Workspace - Chimney for the Cottage

....And another thatched cottage update! Here I'm working on the chimney. I'll be able to start on the thatched roof over the next few days and then can finalllllly start to paint!

I'm using PaperClay for the chimney over the foamcore base. The shapes of the bricks are carved into the wet clay using a needle tool.

See past Thatched Cottage posts below and don't forget to follow the blog to find out more or become a fan on Facebook!

My Workspace - Cottage update

Here's an update on the fairytale thatched cottage project. You can see past posts on this miniature scale model house here.

As you'll see I've made a front door, added wooden beams to the front, stone wall details using Paper Clay, and changed the front door shape from rectangular to arched. I just felt it suited the design better.

I'm going to do a full in-depth tutorial on how to make this cottage and release that soon. It will include a step-by-step guide to making the door. I've shown a few pictures of the door process below, but there were actually many more steps to it than that and these are all outlined in detail in my tutorial.

Don't forget to check back here or the Facebook page for the final result!

My Workspace - the Thatched Cottage

Just to keep you all updated, here are some photos I took today of my thatched cottage. You can see the photos I showed before (the very first stage of the cottage) here.
Now you will see that clay, wood and plaster have been added. I've probably only put in another 3 or 4 hours since those first photos, but I plan on taking lots of photos of the process so you can get ideas and be inspired to create your own things. As usual feel free to stop by the Facebook page and comment / ask questions about materials and techniques. You can comment on this blog as well of course and I'll answer questions.

In case you can't tell, I am going for a whimsical almost (but not quite) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs style fairytale cottage rather than a realistic representation of a Tudor house.

More to see soon, don't forget to follow the blog and stop by!

Deadly Baking Sign

Step inside my spooky bistro and see what's on the chalkboard....! Here we have some 'slate' Deadly Baking signs which have a skull and crossbones and the word 'Baking' in chalky handwriting.

Entirely handmade by myself in one inch scale and available at my online Pixie Dust Miniatures store now....! I have 4 of these signs left.

NEW Poison Pie Prep Board

More poisonous baking is on the cards... this is another new design of a classic best-selling Pixie Dust Miniature! We have here a whimsical 'slate' prep board with a poison apple pie resting on a cotton kitchen cloth, shiny and realistic red apples, a hand-blown glass jar of poisonous tonic, the poison pie recipe on a scroll, a toadstool label and finally a signature dotty red knife.

And it's available at my online shop now!

Inspired by Grimm's fairytale of 'Snow White' and all handmade by myself in once inch scale. ;)

My Workspace - Bake Off!

I've spent the entire day baking... with a little drop of poison.

And yeah, I've had Tom Waits in my head all day. ;)
Since I'm sharing a lot of my works in progress lately (by popular request), here's my workspace throughout today as I made NEWLY DESIGNED poison pies (these ones are 10% smaller than my last ones and the design is a tad refined), and I've been making new prep boards which are different to the last ones.

These will be part of a new range of spooky witchy baking in miniature. Stay tuned for more and watch out as I'll blog about these pies again very soon and let you know when they're available at my online Pixie Dust Miniatures store.

Wizards Gather Here Signpost

Goodness, it's been a while since I've blogged! Been spending too much time on my miniature sets for a web series I'm working on, and not enough time sharing on here. Don't forget you can always see what I'm up to by clicking over to my other blog.

One of my favourite clients brought me such a fun commission last Friday - a spooky signpost which reads 'Wizards Gather Here'. I was delighted to make it. It's a little smaller than half inch (1:24) scale at her request and measures 2.5 inches high.
The base has faux moss and other foliage as well as glow-in-the-dark toadstools.

I took inspiration from Walt Disney's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' (1937) when I decided to include a carved owl design. Scroll down for some 'Snow White' stills which influenced me.

'Wizards Gather Here' Signpost

On researching owl designs from 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' (which I knew I had remembered seeing) I came across a blog (here) which looked into Disney's use of owls in the film more closely... interesting stuff. Last image is from his blog highlighting the owls.
